Resurfacing your Cutting Boards

Removing knife marks

It’s hard to avoid nicks and knife marks from accumulating on your serving and cutting boards over the years. The wonderful thing about a wood board is that it can be returned to its original condition. All you need is three different grits of sandpaper (we use 80, 150 and 220). We recommend raising the grain between the final two grits to prevent fuzzies ( tiny wood fibers that swell when the board is washed). First sand the board with the coarser 80 grit until smooth. Wipe away any dust with a dry cloth and sand the board with the 150 grit. After sanding the board with the 150 grit, wet the board with a spray bottle or very damp cloth. Allow the board to completely dry and finish sanding with the 220 grit. If you would like to take your boards to the next level, you can always sand to higher grits for a smoother finish. For example, our ArtisanCut boards are sanded to 320 grit and our CustomCut are sanded up to 400! Just try not to sand with a grit that is double the last grit you used. Once you are done with sanding, wipe the board clean of dust with a clean, dry cloth (we don’t recommend a microfiber cloth, it feels like nails on a chalkboard). Season the board with food safe mineral oil and seal it by applying our Cutting Board Conditioner as recommended.
