Food Safe Tips and Practices

A sharp knife is a chef’s best friend

Whether you are in the kitchen or in the workshop, the right tool makes your work a heck of a lot easier. Blunt knives require more force to cut, so it always recommended to use sharp knives for food preparation.

Cut lightly

With a sharp knife in hand, apply minimal pressure to avoid creating deep gashes in your wooden cutting board. If you find yourself having a hard time cutting up any ingredient, first check if your blade has become dull from use. Make sure you have the right blade for the task as well, you can feel the difference when cutting with a steak knife versus a proper chopping knife.

Food Safety Practices

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Service’s food safety website provides steps to ensuring that your foods are prepared in a safe manner that reduces the risks of getting food poisoning or worse:

  • Clean—Wash hands, utensils and surfaces frequently. Wash fruits and veggies.

  • Separate—Keep meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs separate from all other foods

  • Cook—Cooked food is safe once it’s been heated to a high enough temperature to kill bacteria

  • Chill—Keep your family safe from food poisoning by refrigerating foods promptly

We recommend visiting the food safety website  and brushing up on your food safety knowledge. Nobody wants a round of food poisoning, but everyone remembers when they do!
