WOOD CUTTING BOARDS
Every Chef Needs a wood Cutting Board or Two!
No kitchen is complete without a wood cutting board! Arguably one of the most used kitchen items; cutting boards also have the added advantage of serving dual purposes. From providing a solid place to chop, dice and slice, to serving up a piping hot casserole; wooden cutting boards do the trick! Best paired with a sharp knife and some savvy technique, cutting boards offer up the added bonus of protecting your kitchen surfaces from becoming slashed and burnt by dinnertime’s main dish.
A Wood Board for Each Job
We recommend having at least two cutting boards in your kitchen, and even up to four or five. Stave off cross-contamination by having a different cutting board for each of the following:
Breads
Meats, Fish & Poultry
Fruits & Vegetables
Onions & Garlic (these flavors linger, so have a separate board for strong flavors!)
Cheeses
What Wood is Best for Cutting Boards?
Not all woods are suited to the job requirements necessary for a kitchen cutting board. It’s important to choose a wood that has a fine, hard grain that will stand up to the wear and tear of being chopped on every day. A general rule is: if the tree bears fruit or edible nuts then it is suitable for cutting boards. Woods like oak, although very hard, have a very porous grain that will absorb dirt and other materials, making it an unsanitary choice. Maple Cherry and Walnut make great choices; which is why we use those woods for our cutting boards! Not only are they extremely beautiful, they are sustainably sourced and can withstand daily use.
Advantages of Using Wooden Cutting Boards.
You may not be sure if you want to use wooden cutting boards. After all, isn’t plastic a much better material to use? We don’t think so! Wood has many properties that make it the ideal choice for cutting boards. Some of which are:
Self-healing ability—closes up cuts to the wood surface
Anti-septic properties—many woods have mild anti-bacterial properties
Durability—although your wood board will show marks after much use, you can continue to use it for many years, and you can always give it a light sanding to restore its surface
Sustainable resource—unlike plastics, our maple and walnut wood are bought here in the USA from sustainable sources, which means our cutting boards are good for the environment
Aesthetics—wood is beautiful and adds a lot of charm and style to your kitchen
Easy on your knives—wooden cutting boards won’t damage your knife blades. The worst things to have in your kitchen are dull or damaged knives!
Why use a wood Cutting Board?
Because it is the single safest way to keep your food safe from cross contamination (such as bacteria from raw meat getting into your fresh vegetables), and of course to protect your counters and knife blades! Didn’t Oma and Abuela ever tell you not to cut on your counters? Well they were right! Another often overlooked benefit of wooden cutting boards is their natural style. They are great to use as serving platters. Put out your breads and cheese on one, or serve up a home-made pizza or a platter of game day snacks... or add some sophistication to your table by using your cutting boards as hot plates and centerpieces that will be the talk of the dinner table!
